On 2 December 2025, the Centre for Bharat Studies, Research Institute for Languages and Cultures of Asia, Mahidol University, hosted a seminar titled “Nandalal Bose: A Pioneer of Modern Indian Art on the Global Stage” at the Black Hall, MATDOT Art Center. The event brought together scholars, artists, and the general public for an in-depth exploration of one of India’s most influential modern artists.

The seminar featured a distinguished panel comprising Tawatchai Somkong, Executive Editor of FINE ART Magazine Thailand and Director of MATDOT Art Center; Kamol Tassananchalee, National Artist of Thailand (Visual Art, 2003); and Assist. Prof. Thatree Muangkaew, artist and lecturer at the Faculty of Decorative Arts, Silpakorn University. The discussion was moderated by Usawadee Srithong, researcher at the Centre for Bharat Studies, who guided the conversation with clarity and insight.

The panel examined the enduring significance of Nandalal Bose (1882–1966), a central figure of the Bengal School of Art and a pioneer of modern Indian art. Deeply rooted in Indian cultural heritage and inspired by Rabindranath Tagore, Bose successfully integrated classical traditions with nationalist ideals. As Principal of Kala Bhavana at Santiniketan, he mentored generations of artists and played a vital role in shaping India’s modern cultural identity.

Beyond historical context, the discussion extended to the influence of Indian art on Thai artists who studied in India. Panelists and audience members reflected on how cultural and social environments abroad have shaped artistic thinking and creative expression within the Thai contemporary art scene.
