Andrew Stahl

August–October 2022

Andrew Stahl is a London-based artist whose works are in the collections of many well-known museums and organizations, including the British Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Sharjah Art Foundation in Sharjah, UAE, and many others. He had visited Bangkok several times, a city that had long captivated him, and had participated in a variety of activities and exhibitions included the Bangkok Art Biennale 2018. He returned this time as an artist-in-residence at Matdot Art Center.

‘Sparkling City’ is the result of Stahl’s residency at MATDOT, which was inspired by the juxtaposition of chaos and tranquility in Bangkok. Despite having a limited amount of time to work, Stahl was able to complete the collection of 3 paintings, 12 drawings, and one sculpture. The paintings are full of things and thoughts discovered by the artist on this trip, while the drawings are his everyday diary, and the sculpture made from trash found in the art center is one of his signature pieces.

Working with “no fear” is a crucial concept he acquires from this new collection. The method he intends to use in his future works.
