If happiness were a person, it would undoubtedly be ‘Itokin’, the Japanese self-taught artist who decided to quit his official job and embark on an artistic journey. Itokin initiated his artist life with the clear goal of spreading smiles to others.

Itokin once stated, “I use three colors in my art: red, blue, and yellow. I began my pursuit of painting after the 2011 Tohoku earthquake, left my job at 30, and travel to NYC, thinking, ‘If someone like me can become super famous, it proves I can do anything.’ From there, with ‘MAKEsmile’ as my motto, I visited 47 countries, creating art while spreading joy. Engaging in street performances, exhibitions, media coverage, and collaborations with brands, I expanded my activities as an artist. In Japan, I participated in various projects, sharing challenges and inspirations. I continue to embrace new endeavors, deliver smiles, and prove the validity of my dreams.”

Now participating in Matdot’s residency program, Itokin has divided his involvement into two phases. The first phase, from December 2023 to January 2024, will be dedicated to accumulating information and experiencing Thailand. The second phase will commence in April and May 2024 when he returns to create works inspired by the experiences gained.
