Born in the United Arab Emirates (b.1990), Ameena Alali earned her MFA degree from Konstfack University, Sweden (2024), and a double major Bachelor of Fine Arts and International Studies from Zayed University (2014). Ameena’s work primarily focuses on fragments of history, particularly the legacy of the enslaved and the post-slavery lives of Afro-Emiratis in the Arabian/Persian Gulf region. Working mainly with video installations, sculptures, and photography, she reintroduces narratives of her own family history, addressing trauma and its aftermath.
Her methodology is grounded in long-term research, documenting oral and visual history, and presenting these findings in a blend of fiction and non-fiction. This approach is inspired by the concept of Critical Fabulation, as articulated by Saidiya Hartman. Through her work, Ameena seeks to create spaces of detail and delicacy amidst chaos, offering alternative narratives that give voice to the unspoken.
Ameena has been active in the U.A.E. art scene and, more recently, in the Stockholm art scene, participating in a collective community supporting artistic research. She plans to further explore her artistic practice by pursuing a PhD within the next two years.
Ameena is thrilled to be part of the Matdot art residency and eager to explore and document the unique elements that make Bangkok a dynamic city. Ameena is excited to see how this experience will influence their artistic research journey.
