Artist Statement
In my early phases of practice, I used to do a lot of landscapes and extensively used oil as medium; after shifting to Santiniketan, I started exploring Acrylic and the subject matter gradually shifted to my childhood memories, stories of nostalgia and experiences. My parents as well as other relatives were victims of the great migration happened during the India-Bangladesh partition, that deeply etched into our survival, culture, lifestyle, and anything we could think about.
Decades later, in remembrance to what we have left behind in Bangladesh and how we were living in India as a migrant community eventually persuaded my series called ‘lost culture’. After working on the series for long, along with my nostalgic memories, I started incorporating my current surroundings; multiple layers and objects amalgamated together on a single surface. The objects, not necessarily associated to each other yet together I perceived a different narrative through ‘magic-realism’. When I started off, my paintings were much colourful, which later on seeped into a minimalistic pallet. I was continuing this practice till 2025. Currently I have been exploring paper as my preliminary surface while prospecting image making through surface-explorations.
MATDOT art residency could provide me with the opportunity to explore more on these paper works, with textural experimentation along with nostalgia, memories, dreams and culture through my perceptions of often incomplete stories to an accumulation of stories or incidents that might not relate individually but create another narration altogether.
