CIRCUS Reloaded
Gianluca Vernizzi
The CIRCUS format is designed as a three-hour, nomadic, site-specific event that occurs within manufacturing, artisanal, or agricultural environments—places with a genius loci where human sweat orchestrates tools and human-designed technology. The dialectics and imagery of CIRCUS art are built on observations and personal insights into today’s bipolar, “god-like” world circus. The CIRCUS Modena kick-off took place in Italy in May and was followed by the CIRCUS Bangkok Charity Tour on 20 October 2024.
CIRCUS Reloaded is a 21-day “encore”—an end-of-year, on-demand recap of awareness. While the works in CIRCUS Modena offer a sarcastic critique of current global controversies, those in the CIRCUS Bangkok Charity Tour are gentle provocations that appeal to the coherence of brain and heart. CIRCUS Reloaded combines both series, capturing fleeting conflicts and dreams alike.
“Vernizzi has abandoned conventional painting. He crafts pictorial images on his world-weary skin, taking up the role of the demiurge artist within the scene, like an unscripted actor portraying existential paradoxes through oneiric art. They go beyond mere paintings; they are exercises in doubt, denunciation, and the semantic dissolution of being without possessing.
“You may love or hate them, but they are tragicomic condemnations of the present-past, while the future remains suspended between East and West. Therefore, if you wish, distinctive art today must carry an activist’s mark, a critical awareness of humanity to trace new destinies with respect for others. Ring-a-ring o’ roses, a pocketful of ashes. We all fall down. Resurrection.”
