In Another Space

In Another Space is a visual love letter to their personal and creative relationship, for the collection of paintings may be seen as a conversation unfolding between two individuals whose interaction with the environment is simultaneously separate and yet shares similar themes and motifs that signify their union.

This group of artworks sees beyond the boundaries of the artists’ home country that may be unsettled by their established ideas, and they wholeheartedly welcome the disruption. As Pakistani artists, Sadaf and R.M. Naeem are aware of the cultural responsibilities that ground them, and yet as “international citizens of the world” as R.M. Naeem calls themselves, this exhibition is a welcome discourse on identity overcoming heritage, and self-autonomy having the last word in the conversation.

To see In Another Space is akin to experiencing a rainstorm nurturing the landscape, for Sadaf Naeem’s works are the foliage and fauna being immersed by the showers, and R.M. Naeem’s paintings is the sky opening up, sunlight shining through and together a new day is dawning. In Another Space is a cerebral stroll through memory and time, and as seen through a series of dreamscape narratives, the viewer is asked to dispel with what they believe and to open their hearts and minds to new ways of thinking.

R.M. Naeem has held more than 20 solo exhibitions and participated in numerous prestigious group shows and biennales around the world, including in Bangladesh, Iran, South Korea, France, China, India, the UAE, and the United States. His work has been widely exhibited in art fairs such as the India Art Fair, Asia Now Paris, and the Affordable Art Fairs in Singapore and Melbourne. In 2015, he represented Pakistan in a cultural exchange organized by the Chinese Embassy, promoting Pakistani art across six Chinese cities. He also represented Pakistan at the United Nations in New York during the “New Pathways” exhibition.

Sadaf Naeem works in painting, sculpture, and installation. She received her Bachelor of Fine Art degree from the National College of Arts (Lahore, Pakistan). Sadaf was included in the Karachi Biennale in 2019, and produced an installation at Alliance Francaise. She has received “Award of merit in the memory of Ethel Portner” 2020, in the group show “Fiber Hawaii 2020” at Gallery lolani, Hawaii, USA. In 2017, she received a Nigaah Award in Landscape Painting. In 2019, she was included in the publication, “20 Pakistani Women Artists You Should Know,” edited by Tauqeer Muhajir. She has also participated in many group shows nationally and internationally.
