In Pursuit of Happiness
Nawat Lertsawaengkit‘s series, “Ka-Meow-Sutra,” consists of sixty-four paintings inspired by the sixty-four sexual positions detailed in the Kama Sutra. The artist questions the meaning of human happiness, suggesting that each individual has their own unique definition and pursuit of pleasure. However, everyone experiences love, an intangible yet universally understood state of happiness, as it is an inherent part of the human condition.
Instead of depicting human figures in these sexual tableaux, Nawat chooses cats as his primary subjects. The felines engage in various sexual acts rendered in vibrant acrylic and spray paint on canvas. The bold, colorful lines against a deep black background evoke the excitement of neon lights in a nocturnal entertainment district. This aesthetic, combined with the cat’s prolific reproductive nature, creates a harmonious composition.
Much like the public’s perception of the Kama Sutra, the overt sexuality of “Ka-Meow-Sutra” initially seems explicit. However, the artist’s intent goes beyond mere depictions of sexual acts. Beneath the alluring imagery of cats, there lies a deeper exploration of the nature of love in contemporary society. The series reflects the dynamics of defining happiness, a philosophical pursuit that has persisted throughout human history.
หนทางแสวงหาความสุข
ผลงานชุด “กามแมวสูตร” ประกอบไปด้วยภาพวาดจำนวนหกสิบสี่ชิ้น ซึ่งได้รับแรงบันดาลใจจากท่าทางการร่วมเพศทั้งหกสิบสี่ท่าที่ปรากฏอยู่ในคัมภีร์กามสูตร นวัต เลิศแสวงกิจ ตั้งคำถามถึงความหมายของความสุขในชีวิตของมนุษย์ ศิลปินมองว่าแต่ละบุคคลย่อมมีวิธีคิดและวิธีนิยามความสุขที่แตกต่างกันไปตามความต้องการของตน อย่างไรก็ตาม ทุกคนล้วนต้องรู้จัก “ความรัก” อันเป็นสภาวะแห่งความสุขที่ไม่อาจจับต้องได้ ทว่าสามารถรู้สึกและเข้าใจได้ไม่ต่างกัน เนื่องจากความรักเป็นหนึ่งในธรรมชาติของความเป็นมนุษย์
สำหรับภาพวาดนาฏกรรมทางเพศชุดนี้ แทนที่จะใช้ภาพเรือนร่างชายหญิงตามต้นฉบับ เขากลับนำ “แมว” มาเป็นตัวละครหลัก แสดงกริยาท่าทางการร่วมเพศแบบต่างๆ ด้วยเทคนิคการวาดด้วยสีอะคริลิกและสีสเปรย์บนผ้าใบ ลายเส้นสีสันสดใสที่เกี่ยวกระหวัดอยู่เหนือพื้นหลังสีดำสนิท ชวนให้นึกถึงความน่าตื่นตาตื่นใจของแสงไฟนีออนตามสถานเริงรมย์ยามค่ำคืน เมื่อพิจารณาร่วมกับธรรมชาติของแมว ซึ่งเป็นสัตว์ที่มีศักยภาพในการขยายพันธุ์ได้อย่างรวดเร็ว องค์ประกอบต่างๆ ก็ดูจะสอดประสานไปด้วยกันได้อย่างลงตัว
เช่นเดียวกับความเข้าใจของคนทั่วไปที่มีต่อกามสูตร ภาพลักษณ์ภายนอกของ “กามแมวสูตร” ก็ดูเหมือนเป็นการนำเสนอเรื่องเพศอย่างโจ่งแจ้ง แต่สารที่ศิลปินต้องการถ่ายทอดนั้นกลับมีอะไรมากไปกว่าท่วงท่าของการร่วมเพศอันหลากหลาย ภายใต้ความเย้ายวนของเหล่าแมวเหมียว แฝงซ่อนเอาไว้ซึ่งความพยายามในการพรรณนาธรรมชาติของความรักในสังคมร่วมสมัย สะท้อนให้เห็นพลวัตของการนิยามความหมายของความสุข อันเป็นปรัชญาในการใช้ชีวิตของมนุษย์บนวิถีแห่งการรู้แจ้งที่ยังคงสืบเนื่องมาตั้งแต่อดีตจนถึงปัจจุบัน
Nawat Lertsawaengkit
A Thai-Chinese artist born in 1988. He studied art at Kala Bhavan, Visva-Bharati University, India, in 2012. A distinctive point in Nawat’s artwork is the synthesis of cultural phenomena. His creations can lead to learning and empowering the notion of culture among society, especially concerning Chinese rituals used as metaphors in conjunction with technology to create indistinct, varied, and ironic elements in contemporary pop culture.
นวัต เลิศแสวงกิจ
ศิลปินไทยเชื้อสายจีน นวัต เลิศแสวงกิจ เกิดปี 2531 สำเร็จการศึกษาด้านศิลปะจากกาลภาวนา มหาวิทยาลัยวิศวภารตี ประเทศอินเดีย ในปี 2555 ผลงานของนวัตมีความโดดเด่นจากการปะติดปะต่อปรากฏการณ์ทางสังคมต่างๆ เข้าด้วยกันโดยมีจุดมุ่งหมายเพื่อสร้างการเรียนรู้และส่งเสริมคุณค่าอันมีที่มาจากความเข้าใจในวัฒนธรรมระหว่างผู้คนในสังคม ผ่านองค์ประกอบของวัฒนธรรมสมัยป๊อปแบบร่วมสมัยที่ดูคลุมเครือ แปรปรวน และเสียดสี จากการอุปมาเรื่องราวเกี่ยวกับพิธีกรรมของชาวจีนเข้ากับเทคโนโลยีสมัยใหม่
