In Matter Life & Geometrical Explorations Series, a European born, American artist Santiago Zarzosa presents two interrelated bodies of work that explore the balance between structure and spontaneity, gravity and geometry, intuition and control. Developed during his recent year as well as his residency at MATDOT Art Center, the series reflects the artist’s enduring dialogue between matter and mind.
In the Matter Life series, large-scale paintings emerge through the physical act of pouring. Pigments descend under gravity, forming layers that record both motion and stillness. These cascading surfaces express the meeting of opposing yet complementary forces—the masculine and feminine—revealing harmony born from tension. Gravity becomes a silent collaborator, transforming the act of painting into a meditation on energy, weight, and time.
Conversely, Geometrical Explorationห turns inward. Graphite, charcoal, and watercolour trace precise frameworks that are then disrupted by intuitive gestures. Here, measured geometry and fluid improvisation coexist, mapping the mental landscape where order dissolves into instinct. Watercolour seeps into the drawn lines, softening their rigidity and opening space for chance and reflection.
Together, the two series propose a single vision: that creation arises through equilibrium, not opposition. Zarzosa invites the viewer to enter a realm where perception itself becomes an act of balance—where every line, drip, and stain reflects the constant negotiation between control and release, structure and imagination.

Santiago Zarzosa is a European Artist born & educated in Spain. He currently works in DFW area after spending over 20 years in the Twin Cities, Minnesota. He is a versatile visual artist whose practice spans oil painting, mixed media, dry-point etching, printmaking, and charcoal drawing. His artistic exploration extends to photography, watercolour, and various print techniques, including Japanese Ukiyo-e and linoleum-based linocuts. Santiago uses these mediums to express his personal perspective on the world, drawing from his life experiences and the diverse influences he encounters. His work, both representational and abstract, continues to inspire and resonate with other artists and audiences alike.
