Tawatchai Somkong

Continuing from On the Path to Freedom, this body of work deepens Tawatchai Somkong’s contemplation of spiritual enlightenment and the human path toward balance. Inspired by the Buddhist metaphor of the “lotus above the water,” the artist reflects upon the middle path as a means to transcend dualities. Here, the lotus becomes a potent symbol of the mind’s ascent through layers of ignorance toward wisdom. The series contrasts destruction and rebirth—where cutting, for instance, signifies both annihilation in the worldly sense and regeneration in the spiritual realm.

Tawatchai employs recurring imagery such as severed phallic forms, rising smoke, and the union of lingam and yoni, representing the cessation of physical desire and the emergence of spiritual clarity. Erotic energy transforms into a metaphor for enlightenment, while the act of “cutting” embodies detachment and liberation. From Inside invites viewers to look beyond sensual surfaces toward the inner essence of being, revealing the artist’s continuous search for equilibrium between earthly life and higher consciousness.
