The Legacy of Silpa Bhirasri

From Italy to Siam. From a sculptor to an art teacher. Over more than half a century since his passing, Professor Silpa Bhirasri has become a revered figure among artists from Silpakorn University, both past and present. Even though many have never had the chance to study under Professor Silpa, all hold deep respect and appreciation for the contributions of this foreign man, who is honoured as the “Father of Modern Art in Thailand.”

Much like other eminent figures in various fields, the birthday of Professor Silpa, which falls on the 15th of September each year, has become a significant day for the Silpakorn community, widely known as “Ajarn Silpa Day.” Numerous activities are organised to commemorate the foreign professor at every campus of the university, particularly at the historic Wang Tha Phra, the first “home” of Silpakorn. The atmosphere is filled with the spirit of celebration marking another anniversary, beginning with merit-making and alms-giving in the morning, followed by academic discussions in the afternoon, evening festivities and stalls selling memorabilia by alumni and current students. There is also a special exhibition displaying portraits of Professor Silpa, created by artists who graduated from the Faculty of Painting, Sculpture, and Graphic Arts.

In addition to the special activities held on significant occasions like Ajarn Silpa Day, the life and works of Professor Silpa have been extensively studied and analysed by many artists and scholars. Whether from an academic or artistic perspective, these works narrate the story and portray the image of Professor Silpa in a grand and meaningful manner.

One of the most significant examples is the Silpakorn University’s organisational identity, which stems from the adaptation of Professor Silpa’s life and legacy. For instance, the traditional folk song of Naples was adopted as the university’s anthem. “Santa Lucia” was a tune Professor Silpa often hummed while working. Additionally, his famous quote, “Tomorrow is too late,” has been widely used and has almost become an unofficial motto of the university.

Although Professor Silpa’s history is primarily associated with the Faculty of Painting, Sculpture, and Graphic Arts, and despite the university now offering an increasing variety of disciplines, Silpakorn University’s identity continues to be recognised as an art institution originating from this Italian man.

These phenomena reflect the status of “Silpa Bhirasri” not merely as the founder but as the saint of Silpakorn University. This concept forms the foundation of the collective memory shared among those connected to the university, resulting in the repeated expressions of respect and admiration throughout generations. Professor Silpa has become a symbol of dedication to work, a legend deeply rooted in the consciousness of the art community to this day.

Silpa Bhirasri

Professor Silpa Bhirasri (1892–1962), originally named Corrado Feroci, was an Italian sculptor from Florence who came to Siam during the reign of King Rama VI to serve as a sculptor. Silpa was entrusted with designing many of Thailand’s most important monuments.

Beyond his official artistic duties, he was a dedicated teacher, playing a key role in laying the foundation for modern art in Thailand. He achieved this by establishing a painting and sculpture curriculum at the School of Fine Arts, which was later founded as Silpakorn University. Silpa aimed to promote art appreciation within Thai society and to elevate the status of artists to a respected and stable profession.

Silpa also pioneered the culture of art competitions in Thailand, such as the National Exhibition of Art. These contributions have earned him the title of the “Father of Modern Art in Thailand.”

Ajarn Silpa Commemorative Collection

A few years ago, when The Great Fine Art publishing office was still operating in the Bang Rak neighbourhood, inside the private office of Tawatchai Somkong, the founder and editor of “Fine Art Magazine,” there was a small portrait of Ajarn Silpa hanging on the wall. It was a piece Tawatchai had painted back in the 1990s.

Given that Tawatchai himself is highly respected in Thailand’s art world, both as a professional artist and through his work in publishing, where he has promoted the stories of emerging Thai artists for over a decade, many people regularly visit him for advice. These include artists, academics, curators, and collectors. Particularly among the artists, when they saw the portrait of Ajarn Silpa in his office, it often inspired them to create one or two pieces of art to give to Tawatchai as a keepsake.

When Tawatchai had received a significant number of works related to Ajarn Silpa, he decided to display them on the walls and in various spots around his office. This led to a general understanding within the art community that Tawatchai was collecting art related to Ajarn Silpa. Artists and collectors became interested in contributing to this collection, and thus it became a tradition for them to gift Tawatchai with artworks depicting Ajarn Silpa from that point onwards.

The relocation of the office to MATDOT Art Center in 2019 not only marked The Great Fine Art’s transition into a fully-functional art space but also provided Tawatchai with more room to showcase his collection of works related to Ajarn Silpa. Every wall of his spacious office is adorned with paintings, prints, and mixed media pieces depicting the foreign professor as seen through the eyes of many. Additionally, shelves in various corners of the room are filled with sculptures of Ajarn Silpa, ranging from small pieces to life-sized representations.

This collection of 286 artworks is the largest dedicated to Professor Silpa Bhirasri in Thailand. It showcases the creativity of over 200 individuals from Thailand’s art community, including senior, mid-career, and emerging artists, which are not limited to alumni of Silpakorn University. They also include members of the public who are not artists but are interested in Professor Silpa’s story. Each contributor has portrayed the foreign professor as they perceive him, using a variety of techniques according to their expertise.

From a modest beginning, this collection of paintings of Professor Silpa has evolved into a distinctive and prominent assembly. The essence of this collection is not to accumulate artworks with the expectation of their value increasing but to highlight the friendships among people within Thailand’s art community.

Tawatchai describes the concept and significance of the collection as follows: “I call it the ‘Collection of Friendship’. Ajarn Silpa’s Room serves as a symbol of the connections and fluidity within the art community in Thailand—bridging the Western and Eastern worlds, and reflecting the brilliance of the Eastern world back to the West, with the image of Professor Silpa at its centre.”
