On the Path to Freedom

2000–2003

This series evolved from Ecstasy Land, continuing Tawatchai Somkong’s exploration of the spiritual and physical dimensions of existence. On the Path to Freedom centres on the idea of birth—not merely as a biological event but as a metaphor for consciousness, perception, and the cyclical nature of life. Tawatchai expands upon the symbol of the yoni, using it as a universal emblem of receptivity, transformation, and transmission between inner and outer worlds. The works in this series contemplate the dual aspects of worldly and spiritual life: one defined by human desires and experiences, the other by transcendence and awareness.

Through fluid, organic forms and symbolic compositions, the artist captures the rhythm of creation, decay, and renewal. The series thus becomes an allegory of existence itself—a meditative journey towards self-realisation and liberation. For Tawatchai, “freedom” is not an external state but an inner process of awakening, achieved through the acceptance of life’s dualities and the balance between the physical and the metaphysical.
